Welcome to [community profile] mix_tape! It's a place for music mixes and playlists. I grew up in the 80s so I remember painstakingly creating cassette tapes so that we could introduce our friends to our favourite music. The internet and digital music make this much easier! I created this community as a place on DW for people to share mixes and create collaborative playlists.

The following types of posts are welcome here:
  • Playlists you have created. For copyright reasons I recommend not uploading the actual music or linking to downloadable files. If you have access to Spotify, you can create a public playlist on that and link to it, allowing everybody to listen to your selection. If not, I suggest just making a list of song titles. Be as simple (just a list of songs) or as elaborate (full liner notes, album covers, whatever you can imagine!) as you like.
  • Mix challenges. Suggest a theme and members can come up with tracks that match the theme.
  • Playlist prompts. Similar to the above, but this time you're challenging the community to come up with complete mixes in the comments. I may run some competitions at some point.
  • General social posts. You're welcome to introduce yourself or talk about music you're excited about at the moment. Please try to keep the topic at least vaguely connected to music and music mixes, though.

Comment to this post with any questions. Above all, have fun!

I'm working on pulling together a mix of love songs that are about healthy relationships; songs that aren't about stalking and don't show off skeevy consent issues or concerning obsessions and troubling dynamics.

I have a couple things on my maybe list:

Better Together by Jack Johnson
Take Me As I Am by Au Revoir Simone

Any suggestions would be really awesome.

I'm working on pulling together a playlist of Breton/Celtic and Breton/Celtic influenced music that is a good mix of French, English, and Celtic languages.

Some of the stuff I'm looking at now is:

La Jument de Michao by Nolwenn Leroy
J't'emmène au vent by Louise Attaque
Mais Qui Est la Belette? by Manau
Dans les prisons de Nantes by Tri Yann
Dondaine la Ridaine by Le Rêve du Diable
The Night Pat Murphy Died by Great Big Sea
Home for a Rest by Spirit of the West

Any suggestions would be awesome.

I am so glad I made this community, because now I really need your creativity. My baby (!) sister is turning 30 in a few weeks, and she is going to celebrate with a London Underground themed party. She has asked guests to contribute songs that refer to trains / stations / railways, or anything to do with underground, or the names of individual Tube (or DLR or LOLtrain) stations. She's a big cryptic crossword fan and is excited for songs that allude to station names in a clever way. The more eclectic, the better.

So, please help me help my sister to have a musically memorable 30th!

Gender

A friend of mine linked to a blogpost on Trans/queer rock music. Which reminded me, I've been on-and-off making a playlist of songs that question standard gender assumptions, or are about people who do.

So far I have:
  • The Raincoats: Lola (this was originally by The Kinks but I don't have the original version; I should maybe try and track it down)
  • Dar Williams: When I was a boy
  • Steeleye Span: The female drummer
  • Blur: Girls & Boys
  • Placebo: I do
  • Pink Martini: Bitty Boppy Betty
  • Peggy Seeger: I'm gonna be an engineer

Also a couple of songs that are about gayness, so somewhat relevant to a gender-themed playlist:
  • Ani DiFranco: Little plastic castle
  • Bowling for Soup: I'm gay
  • Electric Six: Gay bar
  • Katy Perry: I kissed a girl

(I haven't included songs which are about the singer addressing a same-sex beloved, because much as I love those, that would make the playlist a bit too broad, especially when you include cross-gender cover versions of just about every classic love song ever... But it's a bit of a judgement call.)

I'm not completely behind the politics of everything on the list, mind you. This is turning out to be a pretty tough theme for a playlist, so I'm most eager to find new stuff to expand it. Especially songs that are more unambiguously supportive towards trans* and genderqueer people.
